How we can help
Explore thigh and calf care at FYZICAL Woburn
Explore common thigh and calf muscle problems and how rehabilitation can support your return to everyday activities.
Hamstring strains
The hamstrings run along the back of your thigh. After a strain, rehabilitation may include movement and strengthening progressed toward your walking, work or exercise goals.
Request an appointmentQuadriceps strains
These muscles at the front of your thigh help straighten the knee and support tasks such as standing up and using stairs. Care focuses on the injured muscle and your activity needs; knee joint conditions have a separate page.
Request an appointmentInner-thigh muscle strains
The muscles along the inner thigh help control leg movement. When a muscle strain has been identified, rehabilitation can work on strength and a gradual return to activities that involve stepping or changing direction. Groin pain can have other causes and may need medical assessment.
Request an appointmentCalf muscle strains
The calf muscles help with walking and pushing off the ground. After assessment, rehabilitation may include gradual strengthening and return to walking or exercise. New calf swelling, warmth or redness needs medical assessment rather than an assumption of muscle strain.
Request an appointmentYour assessment guides an individualized plan. Your therapist discusses how physical therapy and any care from your other healthcare professionals fit together.
Ask about an appointmentOur approach to care
Thigh and calf treatment, paced to you
A thigh or calf muscle injury can affect how you walk, climb and exercise. Based on your assessment, your program may combine progressive exercise, walking practice and practical guidance. Treatment is adjusted to your assessment, response and goals.
Walking tolerance
Your therapist helps you build up walking distance and comfort in steps you can manage, reviewed as your leg responds.
Progressive thigh and calf strength
Strength work for the injured muscle is introduced at a tolerable level and progressed toward the demands of your routine.
Activity pacing
You can plan how to balance activity and rest so that you keep moving without repeatedly flaring your symptoms.
Return to work and recreation
Together you plan a graded return to work, exercise or sport after a muscle injury, with a home program reviewed along the way.
We review changes in your symptoms and everyday function, not just a pain score, and adjust your program as needed. Tell your therapist about new or worsening symptoms; some changes need medical review rather than an exercise adjustment.

A few answers before you get started
How quickly can I get an appointment?
New-patient evaluations are often available within two business days. Call or submit a request to check current availability.
Do I need a referral?
You can contact us without one. We will help check what is needed for your visit and your insurance plan.
Do I need a diagnosis first?
No. Tell us what you are experiencing. Your physical therapist will assess your concerns and discuss appropriate next steps.
Will my insurance cover my visits?
We are in-network with Medicare, Medicare Railroad, Mass General Brigham, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, TRICARE, BCBS and Harvard Pilgrim. Services for other plans, excluding Medicaid, are out-of-network and subject to clinic benefit verification. We are not a Medicaid provider. Coverage depends on your specific plan. We can help check your benefits and explain estimated costs before your visit. Benefit verification does not guarantee payment.
How many visits will I need?
That depends on your assessment, goals and progress. Your therapist will discuss a recommended plan and review it as treatment progresses.
Is physical therapy right for my leg?
Your therapist assesses your concerns, explains how physical therapy may help and discusses any medical input needed before or alongside care.
What if an exercise is painful?
Some discomfort can be expected, but do not push through pain that is getting worse. Stop and tell your therapist so the exercise can be adjusted or your symptoms reviewed.
How long does leg recovery take?
Your recovery plan reflects your condition, activities and goals. Your therapist reviews your progress and discusses what to expect; recovery times vary.
Is all leg pain a muscle problem?
No. Leg pain can come from joints, the back, nerves, circulation or other causes. An assessment considers these possibilities and guides next steps, including physical therapy or medical assessment as needed.
Can I contact you for a family member?
Yes. Enter your own contact information and let us know you are contacting us for someone else.
